Low Back Pain or lumbago (/lʌmˈbɡ/) is a common musculoskeletal disorder affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives. In theUnited States it is the most common cause of job-related disability, a leading contributor to missed work, and the second most common neurological ailment — only headache is more common. It can be acute, subacute or chronic in duration. With conservative measures, the symptoms of low back pain typically show significant improvement within a few weeks from onset. (wikipedia.org)

Here’s a general ‘prescription’ for alleviating lower back pain with yoga therapy. The lumbar spine can be a quite complicated area when curing the pain issues. A lot also depends upon which lumbar disc is affected. For this article we are looking at the L3/L4 lumbar region. Working with the energies of the lower chakras (Muladhara, Swadhistana & Manipuri) is very important in bringing about pain relief for the lower back, so focusing on them is important whilst performing the yogic prescription in order to bring balance to your whole being.

The majority of pain in a persons body starts energetically in the emotionally, mental or spirit energy bodies (around the body) and then locates itself within an area for you to take notice.

What is the symptom trying to tell you?

Lower back pain in or radiating from the L3 region, can be suggestive of emotional disturbance. Perhaps you are/have disconnected yourself from fully feeling your emotions and this maybe in order to protect yourself from feelings of rejection, sexuality, anger, or fear that you have suppressing. There is something from your past and/or present that you are in denial of facing up to. This pain in your lower back will not go away whilst you suppress your true feelings, about which, only you know. Breathe slowly and deeply in your yoga practice, and let yourself feel fully.

Pain in the L4 region suggests issues with power, work or money. Are you feeling under pressure to provide for your family? Are you overly concerned with your finances? Do you have a fear of failure? These are just some of the issues that can cause pain and irritation of the L4 lumbar disc. Perhaps now is the time to take notice of the pain, and look at the areas you are struggling with. Being totally honest with yourself (and loved ones) will bring you the answers. Meditate on your breath, and focus on releasing the pressures around your lower back, and from your entire being.
