Hyperthyroidism (‘over active’ thyroid)

Hyperthyroidism (‘over active’ thyroid) is a condition in which the thyroid gland makes too much thyroid hormone over a short (acute) or long (chronic) period of time. Symptoms include, weight loss, fatigue, frequent bowel movements, difficultly concentrating, restlessness, and an increased appetite.

The thyroid is located and is associated with, the throat area. The thyroid gland regulates the metabolism through the release of the hormones it produces which are tetraiodothyronine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which are two primary hormones that control how your cells use energy. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid makes too much T4, T3, or both. Energy work with the chakras and pranayama techniques can help balance the hormones.

When the thyroid is over active so too is the throat chakra Vissuhda and so this needs to be brought into balance, along with the heart (Anahata) chakra and third eye (Ajna) chakra as they will most likely be under active. Yoga postures, pranayama and meditations aimed at balancing the throat energy will help with hyperthyroidism.

What is the symptom trying to tell you?

Are you constantly rushing about? Trying to put as much as you can into your day – every day? Do you feel that you aren’t doing enough, yet have lots of energy for other people? Slow down! Easier said than done perhaps but by doing some slow, gentle yoga and breathing work you can bring yourself (and your thyroid) under control. Set yourself as your main priority every day until you are feeling less stressed and more in harmony with yourself.

This over activeness is a symptom telling you that you need to slow down and calm down the constant rushing about – whether that is physically, in emotions, mentally or in spirituality. You are possibly trying to cram in as much as possible into your life, possibly in case you miss something or in being a little anxious. You may be experiencing that there never seems enough time to do what you need or want to and might even feel a persistent guilt about not doing more. Overwhelm is also a symptom as things sometimes get on top of you and you don’t always know how to deal with them. Deep down there could be an emotion (energy in motion) of anger and resentment which is encouraging you to keep striving forwards. This symptom is an indication that you need to focus on becoming more mindful, have less speed and more haste perhaps. Attending a weekly yoga class which is yin than yang (slow flowing or restorative) will certainly help. Slowing down will also help you discover what it is you are distracting yourself from.
