SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder

SAD (Seasonal affective disorder), is a mood disorder which generally affects people around winter time, but can also affect people at other times of year too due to seasonal changes. Some symptoms of SAD include: lethargy, sleep problems, loss of libido, depression, cravings for carbohydrates, tearfulness, and irritableness.

As well as renting/ purchasing a SAD light box at the time of year you feel most low, gentle yoga practices can help you keep motivated and your spirits high. In wintertime getting to bed earlier helps as we need more sleep in the winter months (about 8-10 hours).

What is the symptom trying to tell you?

You are a sensitive being and susceptible to environmental and seasonal changes. This is no bad thing; it just means that you need to take control if these changes affect you in an adverse way. Now that you are aware of the changes you experience, embrace them and nurture yourself at these times. Plan your schedule to take things easier around these times, and perhaps meditate more so that you spend more time with your inner being.  A gentler pace is probably just the thing you need in order to feel better – and aim to embrace it too!
